Gastroscopy

(Upper Endoscopy)

What is a Gastroscopy?

A gastroscopy, also known as an upper endoscopy, is a procedure that allows your doctor to examine the upper part of your digestive system. Using a flexible, thin tube with a camera called a gastroscope, we can visualise your oesophagus, stomach, and the first part of your small intestine (duodenum).

Why Might You Need a Gastroscopy?

Common Symptoms Being Investigated

  • Persistent heartburn or acid reflux (GORD)

  • Difficulty swallowing or painful swallowing

  • Persistent nausea or vomiting

  • Upper abdominal pain or discomfort

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Suspected ulcers or gastritis

Screening and Monitoring

  • Barrett's esophagus surveillance

  • Monitoring of previous ulcers or gastritis

  • Investigation of anemia potentially related to upper GI bleeding

  • Follow-up after treatment for H. pylori bacteria

Therapeutic Procedures

  • Removal of foreign objects

  • Treatment of bleeding ulcers

  • Dilation of narrowed areas (strictures)

  • Removal of polyps or small tumors

What to Expect

Before Your Procedure

You'll need to fast (no food or drink) for approximately 8-12 hours before your gastroscopy to ensure your stomach is empty for optimal viewing and safety. Continue taking most regular medications unless specifically instructed otherwise. Our team will provide detailed pre-procedure instructions.

During the Procedure

The procedure typically takes 15-30 minutes. You'll receive sedation to help you relax and minimise discomfort. The gastroscope is gently passed through your mouth, down your throat, and into your stomach. A small amount of air may be used to expand the stomach for better visualisation. If tissue samples are needed, small biopsies can be taken painlessly.

After Your Procedure

You'll rest in our recovery area until the sedation wears off, usually 30-60 minutes. You may experience a mild sore throat for a day or two, which is normal. Most patients can resume normal activities the next day. Results are often available immediately, though biopsy results take several days.

Benefits & Accuracy

Gastroscopy is the most accurate method for diagnosing upper digestive tract conditions. It allows for direct visualisation of the lining of your oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum, enabling precise diagnosis and often immediate treatment. Many conditions that cause upper abdominal symptoms can be definitively diagnosed through this procedure.

Safety & Comfort

Modern gastroscopy is very safe with a low risk of complications when performed by experienced specialists. The use of sedation ensures patient comfort throughout the procedure. Our team monitors you closely during and after the procedure to ensure your safety and comfort.

Common Conditions Diagnosed

Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)

  • Inflammation of the oesophagus due to acid reflux

  • Barrett's oesophagus (precancerous changes)

Peptic Ulcer Disease

  • Stomach or duodenal ulcers

  • H. pylori infection

Gastritis

  • Inflammation of the stomach lining

  • Various causes including medications, infection, or autoimmune conditions

Tumors and Polyps

  • Benign or malignant growths

  • Early detection improves treatment outcomes

Preparation Made Simple

Our team provides clear, easy-to-follow preparation instructions. The main requirement is fasting before the procedure, which helps ensure both safety and optimal visualization. We're available to answer any questions about preparation or the procedure itself.

Recovery & Follow-up

Most patients tolerate the procedure well and can return home the same day. You'll need someone to drive you home due to the sedation. Normal diet can usually be resumed once you're fully alert, starting with small amounts of fluid and gradually progressing to solid food.

If you're experiencing persistent upper digestive symptoms, a gastroscopy can provide answers and peace of mind. Contact our clinic to discuss whether this procedure might be right for you.
