Colonoscopy

(Lower Endoscopy)

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a medical procedure that allows your doctor to examine the inside of your large intestine (colon) and rectum using a flexible, thin tube with a camera called a colonoscope. This safe and effective procedure helps detect abnormalities, diagnose conditions, and can even prevent colorectal cancer through early detection and removal of polyps.

Why Might You Need a Colonoscopy?

Screening and Prevention

  • Routine screening for colorectal cancer (recommended for adults over 50, or earlier if you have risk factors)

  • Family history of colorectal cancer or polyps

  • Previous personal history of polyps or colorectal cancer

Diagnostic Purposes

  • Investigation of symptoms such as rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, persistent abdominal pain, or unexplained weight loss

  • Monitoring of inflammatory bowel conditions like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis

  • Follow-up after previous abnormal results from other tests

What to Expect

Before Your Procedure

Your doctor will provide detailed preparation instructions, which typically include dietary restrictions and bowel preparation medication to ensure your colon is clean for optimal viewing. You'll need to arrange for someone to drive you home afterward, as sedation affects your ability to drive safely.

During the Procedure

The procedure usually takes 30-60 minutes and is performed while you're comfortably sedated. The colonoscope is gently inserted through the rectum and advanced through the colon while your doctor examines the lining. If polyps are found, they can often be removed during the same procedure. Most patients experience minimal discomfort due to the sedation.

After Your Procedure

You'll rest in a recovery area until the sedation wears off. Most people can return to normal activities the next day. Your doctor will discuss preliminary findings with you and arrange follow-up if needed. If tissue samples were taken, results typically take a few days to a week.

Bowel Preparation is Key

Proper bowel preparation is essential for a successful colonoscopy. Our team will provide you with clear, step-by-step instructions and are available to answer any questions about the preparation process. While the preparation requires some planning, following the instructions carefully ensures the best possible results.
